The camshaft is often referred to as the “engine’s timing director” because it precisely controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. As the camshaft rotates, its lobes push against lifters, rocker arms, or directly against the valves to create motion. This timing ensures that air-fuel mixture enters the cylinder at the right time and exhaust gases exit efficiently.
High-performance engines may use special cam profiles to optimize power, torque, or fuel efficiency. Advanced engines also use variable cam timing systems to adjust valve operation dynamically under different driving conditions.
